The "Quercus Cerris" or Turkey Oak used to grow
in great abundance on the banks of the river Belbo though their number
has been thinned out over the years. This tree, which is depicted on
the town's coat- of-arms and regularly mentioned in local archives,
gave Cerretto Langhe its name. A fortified castle with four towers was
built during the Middle Ages by the Cerretto family
from Gorzegno. The castle and feudal lands passed into
the hands of the Marquis of Susa in the 12th century.
Bonifacio of Savona took control until 1142 when the Marquis
of Ceva and Cortemilia took over. Then, as if to close an incomplete
circle, the original owners, the Cerretto family became
the last feudal lords. The main architectural feature of the town is
the neogothic parish church and an ancient chapel, both in the centre.
Like all towns in the Langa, Cerretto is located in an
enchanting natural setting.
